development

This vehicle was originally constructed and campaigned as an "Electrathon" endurance racing competitor. (see www.electrathonamerica.org)
In this guise it carried streamlined bodywork.

I acquired the vehicle in 1999 and promptly set about destroying the original concept as follows:
» shortened the chassis by 350mm and increased its torsional rigidity.
» fabricated a completely revised rear suspension.
» converted the transmission from Sturmey-Archer 5-speed bicycle hub to belt drive.
» replaced the minimalist On/Off switch with an electronic speed controller.
» ruggedised the stubaxle carriers and steering gear.
» relocated the batteries from their position forward of the front axle.
» numerous detail changes.

This was not meant to insult the original constructors, it reflects a change in the vehicle's use. The delicate original construction correctly focused on extreme lightness.
I desired a more robust vehicle and will elaborate on my design parameters in the following pages.
