motor

The motor comes from a mainframe computer magnetic tape drive.
It is a 4-brushed permanent-magnet DC unit rated:
» 24 Volts.
» 250 Watts.
» 1500 rpm.

NB: In practice it is run at 36 Volts giving 2250 rpm.
It appears to be well able to survive this higher voltage forever.

Dimensions:
» weight 10 Kg.
» body 230 mm x 100 mm.
» shaft diameter 12.5 mm.

A blower has been fitted to ensure cool running at low rpm under load.
Filtered air enters at the commutator end, passes over the full length of the armature and exits from the pulley end.

The motor is further protected from overload by fuses and a physical current-limiting device, for more details see "speed control" and "transmission" pages.
