suspension

» front

Sliding pillar as implemented by Morgan, Lancia & various veteran french voiturettes.

Coil sprung stubaxle carriers slide up/down and rotate about a stationary kingpin mounted to the chassis.
Steering arms and brake backplates are attached to the stubaxle carriers.
The short travel front suspension (only 30 mm) absorbs shocks readily and rarely bottoms.
Stubaxles are 1/2" hi-tensile bolts with nyloc nuts.

» rear

Swing arm as found on motorcycles but the pivots are widely spaced to accomodate the motor.
(see "transmission" notes re constant belt tension)

Mounting pivots are polyurethane bushed. The undamped long travel rear-end is really too lightly sprung for high speed road use but feels gentle on the bum when in paddock bashing mode.
For better handling on paved roads I replace the spring units with solid struts. this completely eliminates any rear-end twitchiness on potholes in cambered bitumen.
An unsprung 'hardtail' with a well padded seat would actually be a very good all-round solution.
